St. Peter’s won their game against Isipathana on 1st innings basis in the Schools Under 19 Limited Over Cricket tournament concluded at the Thurstan College Grounds on the 18th of March 2016. It’s a creditable win given that the Isipathanians were a strong side and this being the first time that the Peterites were involved in a 3 day game.

Resuming their 2nd innings on 106/7 the Peterites did well to get a total of 253 earning a commanding lead of 325. This left the Isipathaninans 326 to get in the 44 overs left for the day.

It must be said that they took up the challenge and put pressure on the Peterite bowlers, keeping the scoreboard moving. With 16 overs to go just before 4.00 p.m. Isipathana had got up to 171/4 needing 155 in 16 overs. As the mandatory overs progressed, they kept up the chase and managed to score 22 runs in one of Manelka de Silva’s overs.

However wickets also kept tumbling and they were 28 short of achieving an impossible outright win with 4 wickets in hand with 2 overs to be bowled. Thaneesha Weerasinghe bowled a fine penultimate over that left the Isipathanians 24 to get in the last over. Going for big hits, they lost their set batsman in the 4th ball of the last over and were short of 20 runs when the match ended, with Isipathana 320 for 7. It must be said that the Isipathanians played courageously and must be ruing the low score of their first innings.

With the Peterites winning this one they have now qualified for the finals but have to wait for 2 matches before they know who the other finalist will be.
