The day a Catholic child receives Holy Communion for the first time in his life is a memorable event. And to make it even more memorable St. Peter’s College had prepared well, not only the children but also the College.

Since the chapel can no longer accommodate the large number of children to receive First Holy Communion, 255 in all, Fr. Samith Rangana Fernando, the Principal of the Primary section and the team of teachers and parents had prepared the hall beautifully for the “Heavenly Banquet”. Not only was the decor appropriate and tasteful but also the hall was air conditioned so that the children and all inside the hall were comfortable.

The Chief celebrent was Fr. Sharm Dassanayake, now at St. Joseph’s College but as a former Vice Rector and Bursar at St. Peter’s was no stranger to College. Fr. Lukshman Anthony preached the sermon in both English and Sinhala while a priest having come all the way from Jaffna also delivered a homily in Tamil.

The children were hosted to refreshments after Mass and the traditional group photograph.

As the celebrant prayed for in his final prayer, we too hope that the children who received the Lord for the first time will be continue to do so regularly and be exemplary Christians.
